Jo bit into the crispy top brownie… and the memories came flooding back. This was the taste.

“Mum, they’re perfect. Just like the old days.”

Of course, she couldn’t recall exactly how they had tasted in the old days, but she wasn’t going to say that in front of her mum.

As she finished it off, her phone rang. She smiled when she saw the name on the screen.

“Hello, Marilyn.”

“Hiya, Jo. Just wanted to let you know we’re having a shopping expedition and pub lunch on Friday.”

Jo’s spirits rose. “That sounds great.”

“Good. I’ll ping you the details.”

“I was also thinking I’d like to do the charity walk.”

“Okay, great. I think I sent you the details for that.”

“Yes, four miles.”

“Four miles of walking very slowly, so think two hours minimum.”

Jo couldn’t recall the last time she walked for two hours, but it didn’t matter. This would be herself joining the Go Club on the town’s carnival day to raise money for Sharon’s charity.

“Also, you’ll need a costume,” Marilyn pointed out.

“Yes…”

“Although we might be able to help you with that.”

“Okay, great.”

“As long as you’re sure. We’ve been training for two months.”

“Honestly, I’ll be fine. I walked to work for forty years. And getting toys to children in hospital is a great cause.”

“Okay, great. We’re hoping to raise five hundred pounds, so any help is welcome. We’re meeting at Tolcombe Park tomorrow for one of our non-costume practice sessions. I’ll ping you the details for that too.”

“Great.”

After the call, Jo checked the email relating to the charity walk. A week and a half from now, Marilyn would pick everyone up in the minibus – the one her husband used for fishing with his friends – and take them to the back of the beach. From there, in full costume, and as part of the carnival, they would walk four miles collecting money for Sharon’s charity.

“Okay, time to test my fitness and work off that brownie.”

She found her most comfortable shoes and… headed straight to her laptop where she ordered new training shoes and some jogging attire for express delivery. In the meantime, comfy shoes would have to suffice. She’d simply do an hour. That would be a good test.

Heading south to the seafront, she kept up a steady pace, although this was made easier as it was downhill for half a mile. She did consider it might not be so easy on the way back and, for a mad minute, tried to think of a way that would avoid going uphill. Annoyingly, the laws of physics refused to play ball.

She paused as she reached the front, as she always did. There was something about the sea that required her to stop in awe.

Tourist-wise, the popular end of the beach was reasonably busy, with plenty of people on towels and sun beds, and some playing ball or splashing in the waves. Against a backdrop of glittering water, it looked inviting, but she had work to do.

An almost mile-long walk along the back of the beach felt like
